Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY)

Launched on 23rd September 2018, PM-JAY is the world’s largest government-funded health assurance scheme, aimed at providing Rs. 5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary hospitalization to over 12 crore poor and vulnerable families (about 55 crore individuals). It covers the bottom 40% of India’s population, based on SECC 2011 data, and includes families earlier covered under RSBY.

Fully funded by the Government of India, PM-JAY ensures cashless and paperless access to healthcare services at public and private empanelled hospitals across the country.

Eligibility

Rural Eligibility (based on deprivation):

Families meeting at least one of these conditions:

  • One-room house with kucha roof/walls (D1)
  • No adult aged 16–59 (D2), or no adult male aged 16–59 (D3)
  • Disabled member with no able-bodied adult (D4)
  • SC/ST household (D5)
  • Landless and reliant on manual labour (D7)
  • Automatically included: destitute, manual scavengers, primitive tribal groups, bonded labourers

Urban Eligibility (based on occupation):

Includes workers such as:

  • Ragpickers, beggars, domestic workers
  • Street vendors, construction workers, sanitation staff
  • Tailors, artisans, drivers, shop workers, electricians, mechanics, etc.

Flexibility for States

States may use their own existing health scheme databases, but must ensure that all SECC-eligible families are covered under PM-JAY. The scheme also supports convergence with state-level schemes, offers national portability, and promotes standardized health assurance across India.

How to register

Online registration:

  • Visit the Official Website: Go to mera.pmjay.gov.in.
  • Check Eligibility: Click on the "Am I Eligible?" button to verify your eligibility.
  • Register: If eligible, select the 'Register' option on the homepage.
  • Provide Aadhaar Details: Enter your Aadhaar ID and generate an OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
  • Fill in Details: Enter the OTP, validate your Aadhaar details, and fill in necessary personal information.
  • Upload Documents: Submit required documents such as income certificate, Aadhaar card, and other relevant documents.
  • Submit Application: Review your information and submit the application. You will receive a registration number via SMS
  • Approval and PMJAY Card: Upon approval, you will be issued a PMJAY card for accessing the benefits.

Offline Registration:

  • Visit a Common Service Centre (CSC): Go to your nearest CSC or an affiliated hospital.
  • Provide Required Documents: Present your Aadhaar card, income certificate, and other necessary documents.
  • Assistance at CSC: CSC representatives will help you complete the application form and verify your documents.
  • Application Processing: After document verification, your application will be processed.
  • Receive PMJAY Card: If approved, you will receive a PMJAY card.
